David Bentley Trio @ The Jazz Sessions

David Bentley Trio  @  The Jazz Sessions

Few would know that the writer of a Rod Stewart hit song now resides here on the Sunshine Coast. An internationally recognised songwriter/musician, David Bentley has had a remarkable international career in both journalism and music, has released several critically acclaimed albums and will now bring his smokey jazz and blues to ‘The Jazz Sessions’, Nambour on Thursday 17th October.

David is a noted jazz/blues pianist, singer and songwriter. His trio is in demand wherever jazz is heard and he is globally recognised as the author of Python Lee Jackson's still-smoking 70s hit, ‘In A Broken Dream’.
The track features an anonymous Rod Stewart on vocals. It rose to number three in the British charts and later turned up on the soundtrack of films and documentaries (including the acclaimed art house movie Breaking The Waves). It has also become the subject of many cover versions.

The latest incarnation is a remix by Harlem rapper Rocky A$ap who lends the original recording a contemporary edge. A$ap has retitled the track Every Day - these being the first two words of the lyrics. For the most part, however, David’s song has been left intact.

David's interests span a wide spectrum. His trio backed jazz greats including Milt Jackson and Phil Woods during the heady days of The Cellar Club in Brisbane. His blues-oriented group held the residency at Brisbane's Port Office Hotel for eight years. Bentley’s Blues Review (with the late Wiley Reed on vocals) pumped up the crowds at the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival several years running.

His 2006 album, ‘Last Man Standing’ album received wide airplay on Radio National. He has since recorded two new albums – a jazz trio album titled ‘DB3:The Leopard Lodge Sessions’ and an album of originals titled ‘Every Day Songs’ (available on his website davidbentleymusic.com.au).
Away from music, David holds two Walkley awards - one gold, one silver as well as a Metropolitan Media Award for his work as a journalist.

The David Bentley Trio – aka DB3 – features the nimble and inventive acoustic bass playing of OJ Newcomb and the swinging percussion of Dexter Hurren.

Bringing their show to the Sunshine Coast, David Bentley digs deep to deliver a smoky blend of bluesy jazz that draws a wide range of influences from sophisticated jazz trios to New Orleans street beats. It’s a fusion of jazz standards, hip grooves, original songs and romping rhythm'n'blues that evolves organically as the night unfolds.
